Course Overview:
This online learning course was developed by the Toronto Construction Association (TCA) and The Construction Institute of Canada (TCIC) specifically for the construction industry. Its primary objective is to provide foundational knowledge and practical skills in construction estimating. The course is designed for individuals at various career stages and roles, including aspiring estimators, junior project managers, site superintendents, project coordinators, tradespeople, and professionals seeking to update their skills to meet Canadian standards. It is particularly beneficial for those who wish to build practical expertise in quantity takeoff and pricing.
Participants in this program learn essential concepts and procedures relevant to construction estimating. The curriculum emphasizes assessing project scope, utilizing checklists, and estimating labour, materials, and general expenses. Upon completion, students are equipped with the skills needed to prepare detailed estimates.

This 9-week, 8-module e-learning course is organized as follows:
Module 1: Introduction to Construction Estimating
- Overview of estimating processes
- Role and responsibilities of the estimator
- Types of estimates and floor area calculations
Module 2: Developing Detailed Estimates
- Introduction to takeoff tools and techniques
- Organizing detailed estimates
- Reading and interpreting construction specifications
Module 3: Quantity Takeoff for Concrete
- Formwork, reinforcement, cast-in-place concrete and accessories
Module 4: Quantity Takeoff for Masonry
- Brick and block masonry and accessories
Module 5: Estimating Finishes
- Interior finishes systems, drywall, flooring and painting
- Pricing finishes
Module 6: Introduction to Pricing Construction Works
- General principles and organizing the estimate
- Pricing labour, materials, equipment
- Developing unit costs
Module 7: General Expenses and Overheads
- Identifying indirect costs
- Bonds, insurance, calculating overheads and mark-ups
Module 8: Introduction to MEP Estimating
- Electrical, HVAC, plumbing
Week 9: Final Examination
Learning Outcomes:
Upon successful completion of this course, participants will be able to:
- Understand fundamental principles of construction estimating

Course Evaluation and Grading:
- Quizzes (Modules 1–8): 32% of final grade (4% per module)
- Practical Exercises (3 quantity takeoff exercises): 18% of final grade (6% each)
- Final Examination: 50% of final grade
- Passing Grade: 60%
